Event Overview

The Incipient Barony of Myrtle Holt invites one and all to join us in a new type of SCA Event- an interactive team adventure designed to immerse you and your teammates in the Middle Ages where you will all work together and test your service skills (and funny bone) in exciting team games and challenges, your prowess in combat and your creativity in Arts & Sciences. Join us for what surely promises to be a one-of-a-kind fun-filled weekend to honor those members of the Summits who have joined the ranks of The Fallen in this entirely new type of adventure and festivity as we celebrate the history of Myrtle Holt this October. Grab your weapons, form your party, and travel back in time to battle the unknown in a dark period of Myrtle Holt history. Are you the right kind of leader, collecting teammates and skills from the Three Pillars, to see this quest through to a successful conclusion?

The Team Competition this year winds through all activities on Saturday- the Tournaments, the A&S Courses, the Littles Activities and the Team Games themselves. Be aware- the Team Games themselves do involve physical challenges and require a minimum of 4 members (maximum of 6). Due to points awarded for participation throughout Saturday's activities ideal teams would consist of the following 5 team members: a heavy fighter, an archer, an A&S devotee, a Little and a Alternate/Mercenary to fill in when and where needed. Don’t have a team or only parts of a team? Don’t worry- we will be having a Welcome gathering Friday evening where you can complete your ranks, join a team or even hire Myrtle Holt Mercenaries to fill in your ranks.  Don't want to be part of a team? Well that makes us sad but you can still participate in any of the tournaments and/ or A&S events without a team- you just won't be able to participate in any of the Team Games, win the grand Team Prize or become an esteemed member of the Defenders of the White Dragon.

As for the Tournaments on Saturday- The Myrtle Holt Heavy Defender Championship, The Myrtle Holt Osprey Archery Championship, The Summits Captain of Eagles Archery Championship and the Granny Grimm Kettle Toss- each of these is it's own Championship however participation in them also counts toward the Team Prize (hence the purpose of the heavy fighter and archer on your team!) Saturday's activities will be wrapped up with a gala Gathering including a pot-luck Feast (Myrtle Holt will be providing pulled-chicken as a main dish), Court, Bardic, Drumming, Dancing, Juggling and our annual Brewing Competition (please note that Myrtle Holt Policy does not allow 'wet' events except for tasting during the Brewing Competition and as such no alcoholic beverages of any sort will be allowed on site except for those entered in the Brewing Competition.) We promise a night of gaiety and fun!!

Sunday will dawn with A&S classes including Basics of Holbein-style Blackwork taught by our Summits Alpine Scholar HL Anya Snihova' (OJL, MI) and Introduction to Leather Tooling taught by Master Brizio de Maroni Corazzaio. The Myrtle Holt Youth Armored Castle Diablotin

Championship and the Ronald Hawkwood Single Sword Prize Tournament will also be held Sunday morning.

Disclaimer: Please note that all events herein are only open to SCA Members/Participants. Due to Safety/Insurance the General Public may participate in Arts & Sciences and games designated on site as open to the General Public however all Tournaments and Team Challenges listed herein will be closed to the General Public. General Admission does not include items for purchase at any vendor nor admission to Saturday evening festivities nor Sunday events. IMPORTANT NOTE- this is a dry event. Alcoholic beverages will not be sold nor allowed on site except those entered in the Brewing Competition. Anyone found to have such beverages in their possession will be asked to leave without refund.

Balls Workshop
Balls, or at least things to throw or roll, are one of the oldest toys. There are some extant ones and lots of speculation as to how the most common ones were made and what they’re filled with. We will be making balls from recycled denim (easy to stitch) with various recycled fillings for use as toys and juggling equipment. There will be plenty of materials to create one whatever your stitching skill level! Once everyone has the materials and information to create one I will give a brief history of what we know about this toy and a few anecdotes and have a set of pictures to look at.

Saturday
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Great Hall

David de Rosier-Blanc
Barding
Barding is armour for horses. During the late Middle Ages as armour protection for knights became more effective, their mounts became targets. Barding was often used in conjunction with cloth covers known as caparisons. These coverings sometimes covered the entire horse from nose to tail and extended to the ground. In this class we will make a caparison that will be used in one of the Team Challenges.

Saturday
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Great Hall

Visc. Jennet MacLachlan of Loch Fyne

No Charge
Scottish Sword Dancing
The Scottish Sword Dance was traditionally done by men but has been adopted as a favorite of women.  The dance is very energetic and is done in four quarters across the sword and scabbard.  This is a wonderful way to make friends, get fit and simply have fun.  Come and prepare yourself for the New Year Hogmanay Feast for we will be dancing the sword dance at that event.  No skill is required.  If you have ever played hop scotch as a child then you are already on your way.

Saturday
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Great Hall

Raytheon de Bures of Acton

No Charge
Repurposing Site Tokens
Every year, we go to events that make memories that last a lifetime. Quite often, these events give a site token as proof of safe conduct past the Troll and as a little memento of the day. For those that touch the heart- either a reminder of the day’s happenings or an appreciation for the artist’s labor- we make a promise to ourselves to keep the token noting we'll find some way to display it. Sadly, too often this thought goes by the wayside when we get home and into the drawer they go, doomed to become lost forever.  In this course we will explore how to re-purpose those tokens. Attendees will be able to create a necklace, earrings, or a decorated lanyard clip to proudly display their token!

Saturday
11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Great Hall

Edward Slash Targetcleaver

No Charge
Juggling
Throughout the Middle Ages Jugglers would perform in marketplaces, streets, fairs, or drinking houses. Some kings' and noblemen’s bards, fools, or jesters would have been able to juggle or perform acrobatics as well.
In this course we will build upon what you learned in Course 1 by taking what you made and learn how to juggle them. Attendees will be required to show a little of what they learned to their Highness' at Feast as a Team Challenge.

Attendance is required for all courses listed above by at least 1 Team Member to fulfill Team Challenge Requirements

Wax Hardening Leather
Hardened leather was used for armor from classical antiquity through the end of the Elizabethan era. Its popularity can be traced to its strength, weight, and relative ease of manufacture. To stiffen or harden leather, you need to alter its structure at a molecular level. This is usually done by combining heat with water or wax.
This class will focus on the wax method. Scraps of leather will be provided for hand-on learning.

Making a Scottish Arisaidh
While the men don their kilts and get ready to celebrate the New year at Hogmanay you do not have to wonder what it is you are going to wear.  Let us help you with the simplest of all garb...the arisaidh.  We will show you how to make one and more importantly the incredible variation of ways to wear the ladies traditional version of the family tartan, the arisaidh.  All you will need is a piece of tartan (checked fabric) in your chosen family pattern that is at least your height in length and a minimum of at least 45inches wide. The arisaidh wraps around your hips so if you are a slightly larger lady you might want to go 54 inches wide for the fullness.
